Project: San Bao

Project: San Bao Conceptual Framework
Project: San Bao, in commemorating the journeys of an ancient mariner, is fundamentally sea/sky oriented. The ships of the ancient Treasure Fleet were called "Celestial Rafts". Project: San Bao aims at developing new methods of sailing that are truly celestial. The new sea drifts above, the inky black.
It has to be emphasized that this is conceptual work. Some of it may not fit into the emerging space civilization, some of it may be impossible to create (plants in vaccuum), all of it is meant to expand the horizons of what can be done. Building and flying the media-savvy, highly pointable STREET ring is the first step.
In terms of general spaceflight, these projects are tools we will use and places to inhabit on the High Frontier. The Ice Miner is a giant chainsaw, or the Aquaduct Colony is a giant shell you grow with robots and Martian concrete. For living space, the assumption is that transportation and initial habitats will include traditional "tin can" and modern inflatable spacecraft with a variety of capsules, nodes and power sources. None of this can happen without Cheaper Access To Space (CATS), but development is already underway on some of what is described below.

Aesthetics
Project: San Bao represents a fusion of lateral creativity and high technology. The vast reflective STREET ring strives for perfection in form, elegance, symmetry. Throughout history the circle has symbolized unity. The grace of orbital mechanics combines with ancient symbolism to present a modern message of awakening in this dawn of the 21st Century.
Postcards To Space and the Project: San Bao design group will be creating a series of spacecraft that turn "public" art inside out. Funded by individual citizens and displaying their art, the decorated Postcards, the spacecraft becomes both individual and public work. In the past, what has counted as public art was funded by patrons and states. Traditionally, satellites have been the domain of states and corporations. During recent years universities, individuals and small business are gaining access to space-based services and actual satellite hardware. Conceptually, "space art" has been around since the first rocket launchs. Perhaps it has been around since the invention of fireworks. Postcards To Space and our Project: San Bao space sculptures will finally make art that actually goes into space. The open nature of the larger sculpture adds new dimensions to what constitutes "public art" while being entirely privately funded.
In other words: Why Space Art?
